2024 Annual Report
Year 2024 continued the worst period in Israeli history. Under the most extreme government ever, Israeli civil society fought for the hostages, provided aid to Gazans, defended Jewish-Arab partnership, protected Israeli democracy, and advocated for a safer future for all. Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors like you, NIFC demonstrated a Jewish way — through Israeli civil society — to care for both Jews and Palestinians.
A message from NIFC’s President
Amid these dark times, your support enables NIFC to provide the moral compass Israel needs more than ever.
This is a bittersweet time for me. As I reach the end of my six years as President of the New Israel Fund of Canada, I can’t help but reflect on how many times we have said the word “unprecedented” over this tumultuous period.
Four Israeli elections in five years; a global pandemic; the most extreme government in Israel’s history – all unprecedented. Then came the horrors of October 7th, the most devastating day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Followed by the ensuing war in Gaza, the unrelenting bombing, the excruciating suspense of hostage deal negotiations, and the blocking of humanitarian aid causing unprecedented suffering for the Palestinian people. All of this while the goals of this war remain as elusive as ever and the remaining hostages no nearer to rescue. Along with all this, we are seeing unprecedented violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
On the other hand, I have also seen the most amazing response from our funded NGO partners and ordinary Israelis who mobilized to protect the most vulnerable in Israeli society, take to the streets in their hundreds of thousands to defend democracy, open the eyes of Israelis to harsh truths about this devastating war, and deliver humanitarian aid to both Jews and Arabs. I am inspired by the unprecedented response of our Canadian supporters and donors, including our unstinting support of NIF’s $3 million campaign to raise funds for emergency food aid for Gazan civilians – the first mainstream Jewish organization in the world to do so.
While Israel’s extremist government is growing ever more reckless — and Israel becomes ever more isolated — I feel even more that we cannot give in to hopelessness or surrender to helplessness.
My hope comes from those on the ground who refuse to give up. It is precisely for times like this that the New Israel Fund of Canada was created – and we will continue to support Israelis fighting for democracy, equality, and peace, as we always have. The response of our partners and the enduring strength of Israeli civil society through these multiple challenges carries deep personal meaning for me. Even in these unprecedented times, we are continuing to sow the seeds for a better, freer and more peaceful future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
I have never been prouder to be a part of NIFC.

Sincerely,

Linda Hershkovitz
President, New Israel Fund of Canada
22 events, 1,420 people
In 2024, we ran 22 events, providing Canadians across the country the opportunity to hear from Israeli and Palestinian activists.
$1.2 million+ in funding
In 2024, we sent over $1.2 million to organizations in Israel that fight for socio-economic equality, religious freedom, civil and human rights, shared society and anti-racism, Palestinian citizens, and democracy itself — including more than $50,000 for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Emergency Safety Net & Gaza Food Aid
In 2024, we funded hundreds of thousands of dollars of aid to Israelis displaced from their homes by providing shelter, food, and medical aid. In April 2024, we became the first mainstream Jewish organization to raise funds for food aid in Gaza, raising $50,000 in two weeks.
Emergency Safety Net: NIFC’s Response in the Wake of October 7th
In the first year following October 7th, the New Israel Fund’s global community mobilized resources and staff around the world to meet the immense needs of the moment. NIFC provided aid to Jewish and Arab Israelis; supported organizations and campaigns advocating for the hostages in Gaza; worked to safeguard human and civil rights in Israel and the occupied West Bank; and to advance a shared, peaceful future. Our Emergency Safety Net focused on the following critical areas:
Humanitarian aid & basic needs
Assisting communities evacuated from their homes after the Hamas attacks, and weak and vulnerable populations including Negev Bedouin and migrant workers, many of whom lacked proper shelters, and providing mental health support and trauma counseling.
Providing an alternative vision for Israel’s future
Formulating policy proposals and developing new ideas and leaders that can advance a peaceful, equitable vision for Israeli democracy in the near and long term.
Bolstering Jewish-Arab relations
Preventing escalation in shared Jewish-Arab cities and areas of potential tension; preserving the space for a shared society.
Safeguarding human & civil rights
Ensuring that freedom of speech and expression are protected; raising awareness about escalating violence toward Palestinians and activists in the occupied West Bank; and tracking and combatting incitement, racism, and fake news online.
Over 1,420 people across the country attended our events in 2024.
We held 22 events both in-person and online throughout 2024, including a cross-country speakers tour, film screenings, panels of experts, emergency briefings, and a sombre 14th Annual Shira Herzog Symposium on the one-year anniversary of October 7th.
Blocking Harmful Anti-Democratic Laws
NIFC’s funded partners are mounting the defense for democratic values as Netanyahu’s government continues its attempts to weaken Israel’s Supreme Court and erode democratic institutions. In January 2025, the court blocked a law giving Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s national security minister, absolute power over police probes. This legal victory came after two years of litigation by our funded partners including Adalah and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.
Safeguarding Human Rights in the West Bank
In 2024 as part of NIF’s “Vision for Peace and Security” program, we worked to block annexation and settler violence, which have soared after October 7th, by supporting Israeli activists working side by side with Palestinians. NIFC’s project partner Yesh Din published data that made headlines around the world showing that 94% of all investigation files regarding settler violence it monitored over the last 20 years ended without any indictment.
The ‘Israeli Initiative’ by Mitvim
In 2024 as part of NIF’s “Vision for Peace and Security” program, we supported think tank Mitvim in building a bigger constituency for peace within Israeli society. “The Israeli Initiative” peace plan is three-step process towards a two-state solution that provides Israelis with alternatives to endless war. We were also proud to bring Mitvim’s CEO Dr. Gil Murciano on a cross-Canada tour in April 2024 to educate us about seeking pragmatic ways out of the current tragedy.
Launching NIFC’s Rabbinical and Cantorial Cabinet
In 2024, 18 rabbis and cantors joined our new Rabbinical and Cantorial Cabinet in support of the New Israel Fund of Canada. These 18 spiritual leaders span from Quebec to British Columbia and include ordination by every denomination.
Our Projects in 2024
Your generosity last year funded over $1.2 million this year towards our project partners in Israel — all registered Israeli not-for-profit organizations — fulfilling our mission to promote democracy and equality in Israel. Since our founding in 1986, we have distributed over $16 million to projects in Israel.
Adalah
Litigation and Media Outreach to Protect and Defend the Human Rights of Arab Bedouin Citizens of Israel living in the Naqab (Negev)
Adalah is the leading Palestinian legal center and human rights organization based in Israel and the sole Palestinian-run organization that works before Israeli courts to protect the human rights of Palestinians in Israel. Adalah is the primary legal agency supporting Bedouin communities in the Negev, including as a member of the Naqab Emergency Room coalition. In 2024, NIFC’s project focused on legal aid to support Bedouin communities in the Negev towards achieving their social and economic rights.
Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI)
Litigation and Media Outreach to Protect and Defend Human and Social Rights in Israel
ACRI is the leading organization protecting human and social rights in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The current, extremist Israeli government might exploit the state of emergency since horrific attacks by Hamas on October 7th in order to curtail fundamental civil liberties, such as freedom of expression and assembly, public housing, prisoners’ rights, and stateless women victims of intimate partner violence. In 2024, ACRI’s hotline fielded 2,400 calls seeking legal advice and support.
Breaking the Silence
Educating Young People on the Occupation
Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran combatants who have served in the Israeli military since the start of the second intifada. They work to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers rule over a civilian population and control Palestinians’ everyday lives. In 2024, NIFC’s project educated students and educators about human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in both formal and informal settings, such as youth group chapters and high schools.
Bimkom-Planners for Planning Rights
Assistance to Bedouin Villages in the Negev
Bimkom–Planners for Planning Rights strengthens democracy and human rights in the field of special planning and housing policies in the Negev for the 100,000 citizens living in unrecognized Bedouin villages. The Gaza war has taken a particular toll on these communities: they suffered deaths and kidnappings by Hamas on October 7th; have neither bomb shelters nor warning sirens; and suffer lack of access of healthcare, education, and humanitarian aid since. NIFC’s 2024 project provided updated research underlying long-term solutions for these unrecognized communities, along with direct assistance to specific villages towards achieving their social and economic rights.
Civil Society Protection Hub
Aiding and Protecting Civil Society in Israel
The Civil Society Protection Hub serves as a clearinghouse for responding to attacks against individuals or NGOs and connects them to an array of NIF-funded services including legal aid, media and public relations support, enhanced cybersecurity, security support, and psychological support.
FakeReporter
Exposing the Mechanisms Behind Malicious Online Activity
FakeReporter exposes the mechanisms and actors behind online malicious activity, assists activists and organizations under attack, increases the accountability of tech companies and involvement of civil servants, as well as provides real time crisis response. In 2024, NIFC’s project with FakeReporter responded to 2,500 public inquiries and conducted 50 studies on foreign influence, hate speech, and online violence against civil society activists. They uncovered smear campaigns against hostage families and launched Arabic-language channels to become the first in the Middle East to combat disinformation in both Hebrew and Arabic.
Human Rights Defenders Fund (HRDF)
Integrated Legal Work for Ensuring the Work and Protection of Human Rights Defenders
HRDF remains committed to supporting and protecting human rights defenders facing legal and physical threats in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In 2024, NIFC’s project with HRDF provided vital legal aid, strategic litigation, and advocacy to safeguard human rights activists and challenged systemic efforts to suppress human rights work.
Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC)
Advancing Religious Freedom Through Congregational Education
IRAC advances religious diversity and defends freedom of religion in Israeli society. Local municipalities control many issues related to the religious freedom of Israelis, such as land and budgets for synagogues, women’s images, gender segregation, LGBTQ+ communities, burial plots, public transportation on Shabbat, education in schools, and more. In 2024, NIFC’s project expanded religious freedom and choice by providing research and advice to local communities and their municipal authorities.
Mitvim - The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies
The Day After Task Force
Mitvim–The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies is a foreign policy think tank established in 2011 with the mission to promote a progressive paradigm shift Israel’s foreign policy. As Israelis seek alternatives to the catastrophic failures of their government’s security and military policies on October 7th, Mitvim provides answers to resolving the underlying conflict with new regional allies. In 2024, NIFC’s project conducted research and provide analyses on promoting peace and security after the October 7th attack.
NIF's Shatil
Tzameret-Kama: Advancing Women as Leaders in Social Change Organizations
Shatil is the operating department of NIF in Israel and has been promoting women’s rights since its inception 40 years ago. Today in Israel, women staff are the majority within social change organizations but are only the minority in leadership roles. In 2022, Shatil developed a three-month leadership program called Tzameret-Kama for Arab and Jewish women currently in middle-management positions. In 2024, NIFC’s project convened a second Tzamaret-Kama course for 18 Arab and Jewish middle-management civil society leaders looking to advance into more senior roles.
Sikkuy-Aufoq
Now and the Day After Education
Sikkuy-Aufoq is an established NGO which has been advancing equality and partnership between Jews and the Arab Palestinian citizens of Israel for the past 30 years. Since the horrors of October 7th and the subsequent war in Gaza, Sikkuy-Aufoq has focused on advising public institutions with mixed Jewish-Arab populations – such as municipalities, health services, universities – with emergency actions that can preserve Arab-Jewish relations. In 2024, NIFC’s project focused on repairing Arab-Jewish relations by providing research and advice to decision makers in public institutions, especially education.
World Central Kitchen
NIFC’s Campaign to Address Humanitarian Needs in Gaza
NIFC raised urgent funds to provide humanitarian aid including food and clean water to civilians suffering in Gaza through the World Central Kitchen (WCK) as part of NIF’s global campaign raising $1.5 million. In 2024, NIFC raised more than $42,000 for WCK’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
Yesh Din
Seeking Accountability for Settler Violence
Yesh Din is an Israeli human rights organization working to end the occupation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and to provide legal assistance to Palestinians whose rights were violated. A sharp escalation of violence committed by settlers and security forces in recent years threatens to escalate into further lawlessness. In 2024, NIFC’s project improved accountability for settler violence through documenting events in the field, representing victims in court, and providing research to policymakers.
