Following the news that long-time Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in Jenin while covering an IDF raid, the New Israel Fund of Canada released the following statement:
For over two decades, journalist Shireen Abu Akleh covered occupied Palestinian territory and in doing so became an icon—a generation of Palestinians grew up listening to and watching her. This week, she was shot dead while covering violence in Jenin. It has yet to be determined who is responsible for her killing. We join the call for a speedy, thorough, and fully independent investigation into the circumstances of her death. Shireen was a journalist, a member of the free press, an institution critical to the functioning of any free society. People deserve to know the truth and power must be held to account. That’s what journalists worth their salt believe, and that’s what we at NIFC believe. It is our hope that Shireen can help us find the truth and hold power to account, even in death.
