NIF Event: Policing and Protests in Israel

27 October 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

As thousands of Israelis have protested government corruption in front of the prime minister’s residence on Balfour Street, these peaceful demonstrations have often been met with water cannons, unlawful arrests, and other violent tactics from police. For many protesters, this is their first experience of police violence. But for Arab citizens, Ethiopian Israelis and other minority communities, police brutality has been a lived experience for decades.

What does it mean for the veteran activists fighting for a more equal society as police violence becomes part of the broader public conversation for the first time?

Join the New Israel Fund as we take deep look at the relationship between citizens and police from diversity of perspectives: a veteran photojournalist who has covered every major protest in Israel and the occupied territories, a veteran human rights lawyer who has represented activists detained by police in Israel and the West Bank, and Arab and Ethiopian civil society leaders who have led the struggle against police violence in Israel.
