Settlers have been attacking Palestinians on the West Bank for years. But something has changed since the time when “Price Tag” youths from illegal outposts committed rogue violence. The number of violent incidents by Jewish extremists has risen dramatically in recent months. Also now, instead of sporadic random acts, the violence seems to be organized, and either ignored or even aided by Israeli IDF forces and police.

Why is the violence escalating? Why is it being tolerated by the authorities? What could stop it? Will the increasing public attention to settler violence have any effect?
Avner Gvaryahu and Dana Mills will dig down into these questions, and more. Both represent Israeli civil society organizations that have been speaking out against settler violence; both have a wealth of knowledge on the subject.
Avner Gvaryahu is Co-Director of Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers committed to making the Israeli public aware of the realities of everyday life in the occupied territories through soldiers’ testimonies. Avner was born and raised in a religious-Zionist family in Rehovot, Israel. He joined the IDF as a paratrooper in 2004, and served as a sniper team sergeant in a special operations unit, mostly around Nablus and Jenin. After his military service, Avner became involved with Breaking the Silence, eventually becoming its co-director.
Dana Mills is the Interim Executive Director of Peace Now and its Director of Development and External Relations. Dana joined Peace Now in 1995, spending her high school years as a youth activist in the movement. After pursuing two political science degrees at Tel Aviv University, she received her DPhil from the University of Oxford in 2014, and authored several books on political activism. She returned to Peace Now in March 2021 to take on a leadership role with the organization.
