NIFC’s flagship project partner, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), has achieved a significant victory in the fight for police accountability. Following ACRI’s petition to the Jerusalem Court for Administrative Affairs demanding that the police publish all the procedures by which it operates, as required by law, the Israeli Police acknowledged that it will comply with its obligation.
The Israeli Police, a national police force that is part of the Ministry of Security, estimates that it will take it two years to complete the process of publishing all its procedures. However, it has already handed ACRI a list of some procedures. ACRI still insists on the immediate publication of all procedures as well as abstracts of procedures that it is not required to publish under the Freedom of Information Law.
The Jerusalem Court for Administrative Affairs has approved the arrangement between ACRI and Israel Police, which has also accepted that it will publish an abstract of procedures that remain classified.
