At a time when strife has skyrocketed between Jews and Arabs around the world, millions of people have been inspired by the enduring Jewish-Arab partnership of Standing Together (Omdim Beyachad-Naqif Ma’an).
Standing Together is a grassroots movement mobilizing Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel in pursuit of peace, equality, and social and climate justice. Since October 7th, their message of mutual solidarity between both peoples – and for peace – stands in stark contrast to deepening polarization and rising hatred.
Join the New Israel Fund of Canada for an important conversation with Rula Daood and Itamar Avneri—leaders of Standing Together—about achieving a shared future with safety, freedom, and equality for all.
Co-presented by Friends of Standing Together Canada and Heart to Heart.
This is not a Toronto Public Library event.
Our Speakers
Rula Daood is the National co-Director of Standing Together and speech pathologist by profession. She is a Palestinian citizen of Israel, born and raised in the Galilee village of Kafr Yasif and began her activism in her home city and later became involved in promoting Jewish-Arab partnership in mixed (Jewish-Arab) cities. Before joining Standing Together, Rula worked as a community organizer, organizing events and protests that drew hundreds of activists.
Itamar Avneri is a social and peace activist. He is a community organizer and a member of national leadership in Standing Together (Omdim Beyachad-Naqif Ma’an). He is also a member of the Israeli Climate Forum, founded by President Yitzhak Hertzog, and a Ph.D. student in History of Science at Bar-Ilan University.
Dr. Mira Sucharov (Moderator) is Professor of Political Science at Carleton University in Ottawa, where she specializes in the politics of Israel/Palestine. She is the author or co-editor of five books, including, most recently, Borders and Belonging: A Memoir (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021); and Social Justice and Israel/Palestine: Foundational & Contemporary Debates. She is a ten-time teaching award winner, including having received the top university teaching award in Ontario. She is currently working with Omar M. Dajani on a podcast about Palestinian and Jewish life in Jaffa called “The Vacant Lot,” and, also with Omar Dajani, a book (under contract with Prometheus) about equality and attachment in Israel-Palestine. She is on the Advisory Council of the New Israel Fund of Canada, and is on the U.S. steering committee of A Land for All: Two States, One Homeland.
Standing Together is a grassroots movement predicated on the centrality of Arab-Jewish partnership. Their work involves mobilizing Jews and Palestinians from all over Israel in pursuit of peace, equality, social and climate justice. The members of Standing Together operate on the belief that Israelis of all backgrounds have far more in common than that which sets them apart. By standing together, they seek to fundamentally alter the existing socio-political reality toward a future with peace and independence for Israelis and Palestinians, full equality for all citizens, and true social, economic, and environmental justice.
The New Israel Fund of Canada protects and advances democracy and equality in Israel. Since 1986, we have helped provide over $10 million to more than 100 organizations that fight for social and economic justice, religious freedom, civil and human rights, shared society and anti-racism, Palestinian citizens, and democracy itself.
Friends of Standing Together Canada is the Canadian branch of Standing Together’s global community of partners supporting the movement’s mission to achieve peace, equality, and social justice in Israel/Palestine.
