Human Rights Groups Petition High Court to Halt Ben-Gvir’s Police Reforms
NIFC flagship partner the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) as well as the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) and their partner, the Movement for Purity of Morals, have petitioned the High Court of Justice to cancel the amendment to the Police Arrangements introduced by the new Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir. The petition states that the amendment will make Israel Police into a political police that uses its powers to promote the interests of the minister – similar to dictatorial regimes. Passing this legislation would deal a mortal blow to the right to protest and freedom of expression for anybody that the government does not like.
ACRI said, “Under the slogan of ‘governance,’ the government is asking to destroy, within weeks, all the checks and balances within Israel’s system of power. We cannot let them succeed and we must stop them.”
